Using general size takes into consideration both height and weight. Choosing specifically by height or weight evaluates these traits separately and gives different results. For example, choosing by height and weight makes it easier to judge your interest in the short squat Bulldog (14" tall) versus the tall (about 27") slender Afghan Hound both of which weigh about 55 pounds, or the Bulldog as opposed to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel which is also about 14" tall but only weighs 15 pounds. Why is the height of dogs and other four footed animals usually measured at the top of the shoulder when their head is higher? The reason is the height of the front shoulder changes much less when the animal moves.
